When you’re facing a legal issue, the attorney you choose matters. You need someone who understands the law, the courts, and—most importantly—your life. At Adkins Law, PLLC located in Huntersville, attorney Chris Adkins brings together a unique combination of law enforcement, military service, legal expertise, and community roots to serve families across Huntersville, Cornelius, Davidson, Lake Norman, and the greater Charlotte area.
A Career Built on Service
Chris’s path to the courtroom didn’t begin in a law library—it began on the streets of Charlotte. After graduating from Appalachian State University with a degree in Criminal Justice, Chris served 6.5 years as a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer, where he made more than 1,200 arrests and worked on narcotics search warrants, confidential informant operations, and high-risk patrol assignments. He was recognized by the North Carolina Department of Justice with Intermediate and Advanced Law Enforcement Certificates, reflecting his experience and training.
Chris also served 9 years as a Combat Engineer Officer in the U.S. Army National Guard and Army Reserve, rising to the rank of Captain. During his deployment to Kuwait in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, he oversaw critical construction projects following the Iraq drawdown. That blend of discipline, leadership, and mission-driven focus carries through to his legal practice today.
Building Adkins Law, PLLC
In 2014, Chris founded Adkins Law, PLLC in Huntersville to focus on family law, civil litigation, and mediation. Since then, he has grown the practice into a trusted legal resource for Lake Norman families. His approach is straightforward: provide clear guidance, strong advocacy, and compassionate representation for clients during some of life’s most difficult transitions.
Chris has handled countless custody disputes, divorce cases, and mediations. He is certified as a:
- North Carolina Superior Court Mediator
- Family Financial Mediator
- Estates & Guardianships Mediator
- South Carolina Board-Certified Family and Circuit Court Mediator
- Parenting Coordinator
- Certified North Carolina Athlete Agent
He is also licensed in the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals and the U.S. District Courts for the Western, Middle, and Eastern Districts of North Carolina.
Education and Continuing Learning
Chris’s education reflects both depth and breadth, rooted in a lifelong commitment to learning. He earned his B.S. in Criminal Justice from Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, laying the foundation for his career in law and public service.
He went on to earn his J.D. from Oklahoma City University School of Law and later pursued advanced degrees including a Master of Criminal Justice from Boston University, a Certificate in Terrorism Studies from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, and an MBA from Louisiana State University.
Chris also completed a Sports Management Certificate at NYU and—never one to stop learning—he recently finished 12 Coursera certifications (149 hours) in subjects ranging from psychology and history to health, education, and new media.
Author and Advocate
Chris is the author of two books:
- The Book on Divorce in North Carolina — a practical guide for anyone navigating separation and divorce.
- I Live in Two Homes Now — a child-friendly resource designed to help kids understand and cope with divorce or separation.
Both works reflect his commitment to making the legal process more accessible and humane.
A Life Rooted in Lake Norman
Chris grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina, and graduated from Myers Park High School before heading off to Appalachian State. Over the years, he has gradually migrated north—first living in Huntersville for several years and now making his home in Mooresville.
Together with his wife Ashley, Chris is raising a blended family with their four children—Tanner, Georgia, Charlie, and Lottie. Like many of his clients, Chris understands the realities of shared parenting: he and Ashley manage two custody schedules of their own. That lived experience gives him a perspective few attorneys can claim—he doesn’t just practice family law, he lives it every day. It’s one of the reasons he is so passionate about guiding families through custody disputes and helping them build workable parenting plans.
Outside of work, Chris enjoys cheering on App State and the Panthers, traveling (with more than 45 countries visited), and making the most of life around Lake Norman. He also pursues creative outlets such as writing local history pieces and developing games with his nephew, staying grounded in both family and community.
Why Clients Choose Chris Adkins
Clients turn to Chris not only for his legal skill but also for his perspective. Few attorneys can say they’ve worn a badge, led soldiers, and built a business from the ground up. That experience shapes his ability to listen, strategize, and fight for his clients.
At Adkins Law, we believe it’s important that clients know their attorney—and feel confident they’ll work well together. Every family’s story is different, and Chris takes the time to build relationships, understand goals, and create solutions that fit real life.
“Whether you’re facing a divorce, custody dispute, or mediation, my job is to guide you through it with clarity and compassion. Families in Huntersville and Lake Norman deserve an attorney who understands both the law and the human side of every case.” — Chris Adkins
