Itinerary one

The lake weekend

Friday evening. Check in near Cornelius or the Mooresville peninsulas. Catch sunset from the water at a boat-up restaurant on the Peninsula or along Brawley School Road — see our waterfront dining guide — or drive over and grab a table on the deck.

Saturday. Pick up a pontoon from one of the Cornelius or Mooresville rental marinas (book days ahead in summer). Cruise north under the NC 150 bridge or anchor in a quiet cove — respect the Lake Norman Marine Commission’s rafting distances. Swim, tube, eat lunch on board. Afternoon: Ramsey Creek Park’s beach if the kids need sand. Dinner in downtown Cornelius, then a show at the Cain Center for the Arts.

Sunday. Breakfast in Davidson, a walk around campus and Main Street, and a last paddle from Jetton Park or the state park before heading home.

Itinerary two

The outdoors weekend

Saturday morning. Start at Lake Norman State Park in Troutman. Riders take on part of the 30-mile Itusi Trail; hikers loop the 5-mile Lake Shore Trail. In season, rent a kayak or paddleboard at the park and swim at the beach.

Saturday afternoon. Head to Mooresville for lunch downtown, then the Mazeppa Park mountain-bike trails or a race-shop visit if it’s a fan day. Dinner and a flight at a downtown taproom.

Sunday. Drive across NC 150 to Mountain Creek Park in Catawba County — 19 miles of trails, a pump track and a treehouse-style playground — or, on the south end, paddle Latta Nature Preserve on Mountain Island Lake and visit the Carolina Raptor Center.

Itinerary three

The history & Main Street weekend

Saturday. Begin at Hopewell Presbyterian Church on Beatties Ford Road, where Gen. William Lee Davidson is buried, then drive to Historic Rural Hill (check its calendar for the sheepdog trials, corn maze or highland games). Lunch in Davidson and an afternoon on the college campus — Chambers, Eumenean and Philanthropic halls — and Main Street.

Sunday. Mooresville’s National Register downtown and mill village, the NC Auto Racing Hall of Fame, then north to Fort Dobbs State Historic Site in Statesville, the only French and Indian War fort site in North Carolina. Read the history of Lake Norman before you go.
